Personal Response
This book was very enjoyable to read. I enjoyed the fact that it is a bilingual text and how vibrant and captivating the illustrations and the words on the page were. While reading I felt the sense of community and love on each page. I especially love the way the author made sure to include the steps on how to make a piñata, as well as a glossary of Spanish words and definition of words that were used throughout the story.
Teaching Ideas
This book could be read during a writing unit, as a mentor text, the text could be used to model for students how to structure a how-to. This book would also be a good addition to celebrations such as National Hispanic Heritage Month, where students could spend time reading the text, then discussing something they learned, such as a new vocabulary word in Spanish. I also think this book could support conversations around significant fixtures/items in Latin culture.
