Summary

Asiya, Faizah’s sister, picks out a hijab that is colored “the brightest blue” for her first day hijab. Asiya walks around school proudly with a big smile while Faizah worries about judgement from others. The sisters are reminded of the words their mother has said that some people won’t understand the hijab, but if you understand who you are, then one day they will too. Asiya never backed down and it showed her true strength and pride for who she is. It inspires Faizah to want to be like Asiya.

Theme(s):

Strength & Pride, Bravery/Courage, Overcoming Adversity

Personal Response

I really enjoyed this story. I loved how it included words of wisdom from the mother of the two sisters throughout the story. During the story, the sisters remember what the mother had said about being strong, loving who they are, and encouraging them to ignore the students who are judging them because they will eventually understand. I made a personal connection to this because my mother also reminds me of my strength to boost my self-esteem This story also shows a strong sibling relationship.

Teaching Ideas

After reading the story, I would have students engage in a character traits activity. In hopes of inspiring others, it is important for young readers to recognize the confidence and self-esteem Asiya has for herself. Students can describe three different character traits Asiya portrays and explain why. Students can share their 3 traits and their similarities and differences. This story can also be used to fill out a story elements map including the setting, characters, problem, and solution.
