Summary

This story is about two siblings who work together to use their imagination and escape their boredom. One day when the children can not go outside to play, thei complaints leads their grandmother to tell them to use their imagination to have fun. They use their imagination which metaphorically represents their freedom to go anywhere and do anything. By using their imagination they “fly” from place to place they honor their enslaved ancestors who did not have this freedom that the children have.

Theme(s):

Society, Imagination, Tradition

Personal Response

I chose to read this book because I am familiar with The Day You Begin which is also by the same author and illustration. I enjoyed that story as well as its unique illustrations so I gravitated towards this book. It is a beautiful description of imagination and it also incorporates the history of the enslavement of African American people, demonstrating how the children have the freedom that their ancestors did not have. The metaphor of freedom and flying was very understandable for kids.

Teaching Ideas

This story would be great to read during Black History Month. This could be an introduction to a project about black authors and art. Each student can pick a different author and do a research project about their lives and work. The students can write a biography about their chose author. This project would be a great way to introduce new authors into the classroom while promoting diversity. Additionally, this would be a useful way to find new books that the students are interested in.
