Summary
This book tells us the story of a young Korean girl named Soe-In. Soe-In is a very small girl and unable to complete her chores due to her size. Even though she cannot complete her chores, she still tries her best. Soe-In is resilient and volunteers to travel into the tall mountains to investigate why the sky became dark. As Soe-In makes her way through the mountains she discovers that a spirit tiger devoured the sun by accident. Now, it is her job to help both the spirit tiger and her village.
Theme(s):
“Don’t let negative opinions win.” “You can do anything you put your mind to.” “With a positive attitude anything is possible.”
Personal Response
I really enjoyed reading this book. The book made me feel unstoppable. This is because Soe-In was resilient in her journey to investigate why the sky became dark, she did not let anyone’s opinions stop her. I can relate to this story because not many people believed that I would graduate from college, but I didn’t let their opinions get the best of me and now I am completing my masters degree.
Teaching Ideas
I would incorporate this book into SEL, Writing, and Social Studies. I would read this book and complete a whole-group discussion. Then, I would have students write about a time someone made them feel less than, tell me how they felt, and what they ended up doing in order to feel better. Next, I would read the author’s note which mentions that in Korea tigers are extinct. Then I’d have students research about animals who may become extinct in North America.
