Summary

In the book Tofu Takes Time, Lin decides to make tofu with her NaiNai. Lin explains the process in which NaiNai goes through to make the tofu. She has a hard time in the beginning due to the fact the tofu is taking so long to make and they could have picked it up from the store. However, NaiNai wanted Lin to be patient and learn what went into making tofu and for her to genuinely enjoy the process. In the end Lin is proud of herself and loves the tofu!

Personal Response

I thought this book was a very cute and wholesome read. It showed the time, effort, and patience that had to go into making this cultural dish between Lin and her NaiNai. The author did a great job in showing the steps of what went into the tofu, but also making it an enjoyable read showing Lin’s impatience and commentary as the tofu preparation and making went on. Overall, I thought this was a really sweet book.

Teaching Ideas

One idea you could use for this in a lesson could be with sequencing. The teacher could have the students put in order the steps of making the tofu or how Lin’s emotions, commentary, and overall personality change throughout. This could be a great opportunity for students to turn and talk with a partner while going through the sequencing. The teacher could gauge the students understandings and the different discussions by walking around and listening.
