Personal Response

I loved how unique this story was in the sense that each page was illustrated by a different person. I love how this story was informative yet told a story at the same time. As readers, we learn about the challenges they faced and you can really feel for them. The emotion that the story brings out is important. When reading this story to students, they will feel for these people and build compassion. This is an important trait to instill in children.

Teaching Ideas

I would use this story for a lesson on immigration. There are so many students that have immigrated to the United States recently. I believe it would be powerful and very informative for the students to hear their peer’s perspectives on immigration. Those who have not immigrated, they can interview family members and present their stories to the class. America was built on those who immigrated to the United States.
