Summary
After a volcano in Japan erupts, crops in a small village were destroyed. This is home to many including a blind girl, Yuko-chan. In efforts to help the community, she followed the teachings of a monk, that said: “If you fall seven times, you must pick yourself up eight times!” This motivated her to make ‘Daruma Dolls’ to sell to help her village. Many were reluctant to support her until they saw it in action. Villagers loved the idea and helped make and sell the dolls, saving the village!

Personal Response
This book was empowering as although the main character was blind, Yuko-chan showed everyone that they are capable of anything they put their mind to. After the destruction of the village the people were praying, and the lights went out causing people to stop the prayer but Yuko-chan kept going as she memorized the word. She said “Wow! I guess I’m not so handicapped after all!” This book holds so much power as it shows Yuko-chan not letting her disabilities define her and to keep persisting.
Teaching Ideas
This book has a powerful message and can be used within the classroom to promote a growth mindset for students. Students often give up when there are challenges or setbacks but after reading this book they can become motivated that they are capable of anything. Within the classroom I would have students write about a challenge they have faced or are facing and they discuss or write about ways that they can overcome it just like Yuko-chan did to help her village in the story.
